From Field Research to Exhibition
ART LAB X · Fall–Winter 2026

sub specie aeternitatis
ART LAB X

ART LAB X

Field Research as Practice
Observe → Analyze → Curate → Exhibit

CURRENT presents the research and artistic practice of ART LAB X as it unfolds. Each project is not simply preparation for an exhibition; it is a course of research in which observations and questions raised in the field of art are developed into analysis and curatorial planning, and finally realized as an exhibition.

From Field Research to Exhibition
ART LAB X · Fall–Winter 2026 is a research and practice project that begins with field research in art museums and national museums and leads to an exhibition of its own.
Participants observe works, exhibitions, spaces, and the experience of viewing at first hand, and analyze the questions they encounter along the way. That research grows into curating and exhibition planning, and is ultimately realized as a single act of artistic practice.
1st Exhibition
Under the Aspect of Eternity
sub specie aeternitatis
This is the name of the first exhibition of ART LAB X, presented jointly by the Department of X-Cultural Studies and the Institute for X-Cultural Studies.
The Science of Feelings, the foundation of our department, is the study that understands the pure supreme good (純粹至善) of feeling within the necessity of eternity. So long as feeling is defined as a momentary change of the body, the Science of Feelings is at the same time the work of understanding the whole of nature within that pure supreme good — for nature is a single whole in which infinite bodies cross one another in infinite ways. Herein lies the reason this discipline turns toward a world where all is good.
The truth of the world is never synthesized, however much information is gathered. This is precisely why the Science of Feelings of X-Cultural Studies is needed in an age of artificial intelligence devoted to the synthesis of information. If humanity is to enjoy peace, happiness, and the flourishing of civilization together with artificial intelligence, the human mind must first learn and understand a world where all is good. That beginning lies in recognizing one's own feeling at this very moment — in learning the pure supreme good of one's own feeling.
ART LAB X wishes to share this learning, the joy of understanding oneself, with the whole world.
2026 marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of Kookmin University, and the first art exhibition ever held by the Department of X-Cultural Studies. To this occasion we bring the spirit of X-Cultural Studies itself, taking "Under the Aspect of Eternity" as the name of the exhibition. November 9–20, 2026 · Myeongwon Museum, Kookmin University

Orientation
Participants came to understand the aims of ART LAB X and the full course of its research and practice, and shared the methods of field research along with the task set for each stage.
To move the project into full execution, roles were assigned in detail, the exhibition budget was confirmed, and preparation of the project proposal and the running of the event were reviewed together. The exhibition title, the participating artists, and the Solo Booth structure were also settled at this session.
The session began with the eight definitions in Part I of Spinoza’s Ethics, establishing a philosophical foundation in the Science of Feelings for thinking about the nature of emotion, freedom, and happiness. This was followed by a pre-field lecture led by Project Manager Lee Su-jeong for the upcoming Leeum Museum of Art visit, and group discussions on the project tasks assigned in the previous session.
At Leeum Museum of Art, participants freely viewed Koo Jeong A’s OUSSSMOS, then took part in an Art Talk on the works, feelings, and the viewing experience, followed by group discussions organized around their ART LAB X project roles.
Led by Hyojung Kim, participants visited Myeongwon Museum at Kookmin University for an on-site survey in preparation for the curating and exhibition realization of Under the Aspect of Eternity, opening November 9. The team examined the structure of the exhibition space, visitor circulation, sightlines, and the relationship between works and space, translating the exhibition plan into concrete spatial possibilities.
A preparatory session led by Sujung Lee explored the analysis of Do Ho Suh’s works ahead of field research. Hyojung Kim then guided participants through the Seven Emotions, self-understanding, and artistic creation in preparation for Under the Aspect of Eternity.

Under the Aspect of Eternity
The research and planning developed through field research and curating are realized as the first exhibition of ART LAB X.
Field Research as Practice
In ART LAB X, each visit to the field is not simply a tour of a museum. What one sees there, what one feels, and what question one discovers become the starting point of research. Questions found in observation lead to analysis, analysis to curating and planning, and planning to exhibition. That entire course is the research and the artistic practice of ART LAB X.
Observe → Analyze → Curate → Exhibit
A question that begins in the field becomes research, and research becomes an exhibition.
